• 2.0 out of 5 stars from Half Moon Kit -- Disappointing book from Nicdk Horrnby : I've enjoyed other books by Hornby ("Juliet Naked", "About a Boy", "High Fidelity") , but this one just fell flat. It was about two people who are wildly unsuited to each other but they start an affair and it's still going on 3 years later. I kept asking both of them, in my head, "Why are you keeping on with this? Find someone you can be happy with!" And nothing really happens in it. They start an affair, neither one of them really changes, nothing happens. There's no real story arc, they don't have any difficulties to overcome and they aren't interesting. I did finish reading the whole thing although I was tempted to abandon it several times. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2020 )

• 3.0 out of 5 stars from Weagle -- What keeps this couple together? : The last Hornby novel I read was the excellent Juliet, Naked so I was really looking forward to this. In Just Like You, you get the perceptive dialogue he is known for, but the problem is with the central relationship. Outside of an initial physical attraction, I’m not sure what keeps these two very different people together. The point, obviously, was to portray a loving couple trying to persevere through generational and racial differences so you find the doubt and second-guessing you would expect. But even as their relationship matures their internal monologues are mainly filled with insecurities and there is little to suggest their bond runs much deeper than the initial attraction. A fling can certainly blossom into a richer connection, but that doesn’t happen here even as the characters become more intertwined. Insightful prose alone won’t keep a story afloat when you’re not invested in the relationship at its core. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2020 )

The writing was pleasant as always, but the main characters were not as well developed as in his past work. Too much of the story followed the theme: "This relationship will never work. Your right. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Shef -- A shallow treatment of 2 serious subjects : Look, no one is going to mistake Nick Hornby for James Joyce, although they did both celebrate the everyday and the profane. Here Mr. Hornby writes a pouffy, very easy reader story that tries to make a connection to racism, aging and Brexit. And given the profound nature of these issues, his breezy approach to these characters and the bland plot is off putting. Did I get a new insight into racism? Or growing old? Or the ramifications of Brexit? Hornby offers no new insights, no memorable characters, no lyrical writing bits. Where is the art in this book? It is uninspired and predictable. Also, Hornsby almost never clearly identifies the speaker of particular statements. The result is that I had to count back quotes, sometimes several pages back, to figure out who is speaking. All so simple so far, however when they come from two completely different worlds the cracks start to appear. Joseph is a 20something aspiring musician and doesn’t really have a focus in life whereas Lucy is in her 40s, a divorcee with two children. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Mandrek Larl -- Warning: You too may find yourself wanting a different outcome ... : Hornby uses the Brexit Referendum as the centre-piece around which he builds this tale of love [that should really be lust] and difference, nice idea. The principles, Lucy a separated 42 year old university educated white woman with a responsible job and two kids, and Joseph a 22 year old single irresponsible school drop-out black man have nothing in common [apart from lust]. But Hornby is at great pains to expose their differences, and so often, that it quickly becomes (a) tedious and more importantly (b) difficult to imagine where he might have got the idea that this romance could have any credibility! • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Libby -- Didn't ring true : I was a huge fan of early Nick Hornby books, but it feels like maybe I've grown up and his writing hasn't grown with me. The characters weren't particularly deep and almost nothing about their relationship rang true. It didn't help that I'm a 42 year old mother, like Lucy, and just cannot envisage any possible situation where I'd enter into a relationship with a 22 year old boy.
